Background

The war grew out of political polarization, social unrest, and conflict over reforms in the Second Spanish Republic. Conservatives, left-wing groups, the military, and regional interests were deeply divided before the coup.

Course of the war

The uprising began in Spanish Morocco and spread to mainland Spain, but it did not achieve a quick takeover. Fighting continued across the country until the Republicans surrendered in early 1939.

Foreign intervention

The Nationalists received major aid from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, while the Republicans received assistance from the Soviet Union and Mexico. International volunteers also fought, including the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion from Canada.

Aftermath

Franco’s victory brought a dictatorship that lasted until 1975. The war also produced mass deaths, exile, repression, and long-term political and social consequences in Spain.
