Origin

The concept originated in the 1994 feature film *Stargate*, which introduced the basic setting and the device at the centre of the franchise. The film was directed by Roland Emmerich and co-written with Dean Devlin. It was released in the United States and Canada on October 28, 1994.

Television expansion

The film inspired a long-running television franchise, led by *Stargate SG-1* and followed by spin-offs including *Stargate Atlantis* and *Stargate Universe*. These series expanded the fictional universe and its mythology.

Later productions

The franchise continued with direct-to-video films such as *Stargate: The Ark of Truth* and *Stargate: Continuum*. Additional television and animated projects also carried the brand.
