The story takes place in Monopolis, a futuristic city in a world where the Western nations have merged into a single state. The narrative follows characters connected by fame, love, rebellion, and political conflict.

Cultural impact

The work helped turn several songs into enduring Francophone hits and brought performers such as Daniel Balavoine and Diane Dufresne wider recognition. It is often described as the best-known rock opera in French-language music.

Later versions

An English-language studio version was produced in 1992 with lyrics by Tim Rice. The work has continued to be revived and reinterpreted in later stage productions.
