Early life and education

Stephen Miran was born in June 1983. He studied economics, philosophy, and mathematics at Boston University before earning a PhD in economics from Harvard University.

Career

Miran worked in financial markets before joining the U.S. Department of the Treasury as a senior adviser for economic policy. He later held roles at Hudson Bay Capital Management and the Manhattan Institute.

White House and Federal Reserve roles

In 2025, Miran became chair of the Council of Economic Advisers. He was later confirmed to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in September 2025 and resigned from that post in May 2026.

Economic views

Miran has written on fiscal policy, monetary policy, and trade, and has been described as a prominent advocate of tariff-based trade policy. He has also argued for reforms to the Federal Reserve’s structure and independence.
