Steve Ditko was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in 1927 and later entered the comics industry in the 1950s. He worked for publishers including Atlas Comics, the precursor to Marvel Comics.

Ditko is most widely known for co-creating Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. He also contributed to the development of other Marvel characters and visual designs, helping define the early look of Marvel's superhero line.

Work outside Marvel

After Marvel, Ditko created or co-created characters for Charlton Comics and DC Comics, including The Question, The Creeper, Hawk and Dove, Captain Atom, and Blue Beetle. Many of these characters later became influential in wider popular culture.
