Development

The StG 44 emerged from German wartime attempts to combine the range of a rifle with the firepower of a submachine gun. It evolved from earlier Maschinenkarabiner and MP 43/MP 44 designations before being officially named Sturmgewehr 44 in 1944.

Design

The rifle was gas-operated and selective-fire, typically described as using a long-stroke piston and tilting or rotating bolt arrangement depending on the source. It was chambered for the intermediate 7.92×33mm Kurz cartridge and fed from a 30-round detachable magazine.

Operational use

The StG 44 entered service late in the Second World War and saw combat with German forces, but it arrived too late to replace existing infantry weapons. Its practical firing characteristics made it well suited to combat at typical infantry ranges of a few hundred metres.

Legacy

The StG 44 is widely credited with defining the assault-rifle category. Historians and weapons references commonly describe it as a direct predecessor to postwar military rifles and an important influence on later infantry weapon design.
