He ruled from Samarkand and built an empire across much of Central Asia, Persia, and parts of South Asia, the Middle East, and Russia. He is remembered both for his military conquests and for the Timurid dynasty’s later cultural achievements.

Early life and origins

Timur was born in the 1330s near Samarkand in Transoxiana, in what is now Uzbekistan. Sources describe him as Turco-Mongol or Turkic and note his association with the Barlas tribe.

Rise to power

He rose in the 1360s and became the dominant ruler in the region, eventually establishing Samarkand as his capital. He is associated with the formation of the Timurid state and dynasty.

Conquests and rule

Timur led major campaigns across Iran, Central Asia, India, Syria, and Russia, and his empire reached from India toward the Mediterranean in its widest extent. He is often described as a highly effective but exceptionally destructive military leader.

Death and legacy

Timur died in 1405 during a campaign near Otrar. His dynasty endured after his death, and the Timurid period later became associated with important cultural and artistic patronage.
