In each version, contestants complete challenges to add money to a prize pot while trying to identify a hidden saboteur, the “Mole.” The best-known American editions aired on ABC from 2001 to 2008 and on Netflix beginning in 2022.

Format

Contestants work together on missions to build a prize pot, but one participant is secretly assigned to undermine the group. The identity of the Mole is concealed from both the other players and, in many versions, the audience.

American versions

The American adaptation originally ran on ABC from 2001 to 2008. Netflix later revived the series in 2022 with a new cast and host.

International origin

The format originated in Belgium as *De Mol* and has been adapted in many countries. The concept became an international reality franchise after its initial success.

Gameplay

Episodes usually feature physical and mental challenges, followed by a quiz on the Mole’s identity. The contestant who performs worst on the quiz is eliminated, leaving one winner and the Mole at the end.
