Tommy Tuberville is an American Republican politician and former college football coach who has served as a U.S. senator from Alabama since 2021. Before entering politics, he coached at several universities, including Auburn, Mississippi, Texas Tech, and Cincinnati. He became nationally prominent for his 2023 Senate hold that delayed military promotions in protest of a Defense Department abortion-related travel policy.

Early life and education

Tuberville was born in Camden, Arkansas, and attended Southern Arkansas University, where he played defensive back and earned a degree in physical education.

Football coaching career

Before politics, Tuberville spent about 40 years in football as a coach and analyst. He was best known for his long tenure at Auburn University, where he led the program from 1999 to 2008.

U.S. Senate career

Tuberville was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2020 and began serving in January 2021. He succeeded Doug Jones and became aligned with the Republican Party and Donald Trump.

2023 military promotions hold

Tuberville drew national attention in 2023 when he blocked hundreds of senior military promotions for months in protest of a Defense Department policy covering abortion-related travel expenses.
