He became one of the most influential figures in contemporary fashion before his death in 2021 at age 41. He was diagnosed privately with cardiac angiosarcoma, a rare cancer, in 2019.

Early life and education

Virgil Abloh was born in Rockford, Illinois, in 1980. He trained as an architect before becoming known in fashion and design.

Career

Abloh founded Pyrex Vision and later Off-White, which became a major luxury streetwear brand. He also worked across fashion, music, and art, and became a prominent collaborator in the wider culture industry.

Louis Vuitton

In 2018, Abloh became artistic director of Louis Vuitton menswear, a landmark appointment that made him one of the most visible Black executives in global luxury fashion. He remained in the role until his death in 2021.

Death

Abloh died after a private battle with cardiac angiosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. Public statements from his family said he had been treated privately since his diagnosis in 2019.
