Widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time, he was also a prominent West Indies captain and a major figure in the team’s success during the 1970s and 1980s.

Early life and background

Viv Richards was born in St. John's, Antigua, on 7 March 1952 and later became one of the most recognizable cricketers from the West Indies.

International career

Richards made his Test debut in 1974 and went on to play for the West Indies until 1991, building one of the strongest batting records of his era. He played 121 Test matches and scored 8,540 Test runs at an average of 50.23. In One Day Internationals, he scored 6,721 runs at an average of 47.00 and a strike rate of 90.20.

Captaincy and major achievements

He captained the West Indies in both Test cricket and ODIs during the 1980s. He was part of the West Indies teams that won the 1975 and 1979 Cricket World Cups.

Recognition and honours

Richards was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009. He was named among Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Century in 2000.
