He commanded Voskhod 1 in 1964, the first spaceflight with more than one crew member, and later died during the Soyuz 1 mission in 1967 after a parachute failure on re-entry. He is widely recognized as the first human to die during a spaceflight incident.

Early life and career

Komarov was born in Moscow in 1927 and trained as a pilot and engineer before joining the Soviet space program. He worked as a test pilot and aerospace engineer prior to becoming a cosmonaut.

Voskhod 1 mission

In 1964, Komarov commanded Voskhod 1, which carried a multi-person crew into space for the first time. The mission was a major milestone in early human spaceflight.

Soyuz 1 and death

Komarov flew aboard Soyuz 1 in April 1967, the program’s first crewed test flight. A parachute failure prevented a safe landing, and he died when the capsule crashed after re-entry.

Legacy

Komarov is remembered as an important early Soviet spaceflight figure and as the first person known to have died during a space mission. His death led to lasting attention to spacecraft safety and test procedures.
