Bernard Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, on September 8, 1941. He attended Brooklyn College and later the University of Chicago, where he earned a B.A. His early political views were shaped by civil rights activism and left-of-centre politics.

Political career

Sanders entered elected office as mayor of Burlington, Vermont, serving from 1981 to 1989. He then represented Vermont in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1991 to 2007. Since 2007, he has served in the U.S. Senate, winning reelection in 2024. He is the longest-serving independent in U.S. congressional history and has built a national profile as a progressive legislator focused on income inequality, labour, and health care.

Presidential campaigns
