History

Black Flag formed in Hermosa Beach in 1976 under the name Panic and soon became Black Flag. The band developed a fast, aggressive sound and became known for extensive touring and frequent lineup changes.

Musical style and influence

Black Flag is associated with hardcore punk and is often cited as one of the genre’s originators. Their later, heavier and more experimental material also influenced post-hardcore and later heavy music styles.

SST Records

Greg Ginn created SST Records to release Black Flag’s music when other labels would not. The label became an important independent outlet for punk and alternative bands.

Later activity

Black Flag dissolved in 1986, but later reunions and touring lineups used the name again. The band’s legacy continued through related projects and ongoing interest in its catalog.
