Henry Rollins was born Henry Lawrence Garfield on February 13, 1961, in Washington, D.C. His early public life was centered in the Washington, D.C. punk scene, and he began his music career with the hardcore punk band State of Alert in 1980.

Music career

Rollins first gained attention with State of Alert before joining Black Flag in 1981. After Black Flag disbanded in 1986, he formed Rollins Band, which became the core of his later music career.

Writing and spoken word

In addition to music, Rollins became known for spoken word performance and writing. He founded the publishing imprint 2.13.61 in 1984, and won a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for Get in the Van.
