He acceded to the throne on 8 September 2022 after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, and was crowned on 6 May 2023. In February 2024, Buckingham Palace announced that he had been diagnosed with a form of cancer.

Early life

Charles was born on 14 November 1948 at Buckingham Palace in London as the eldest child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He became heir apparent when his mother became queen in 1952.

Reign

Charles became king immediately upon the death of Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September 2022. His coronation took place at Westminster Abbey on 6 May 2023. He holds the title King of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms.

Marriage and family

Charles married Diana Spencer in 1981; the marriage ended in divorce in 1996. He married Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005, who is now Queen Camilla. His full name is Charles Philip Arthur George.

Public life and health

Charles has continued constitutional duties while reducing some public-facing engagements since his cancer diagnosis was announced by Buckingham Palace in February 2024. As monarch of Canada, he is also King of Canada and the constitutional head of state for Canadians.
