Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark; 10 June 1921 – 9 April 2021) was the husband of Queen Elizabeth II and served as consort of the British monarch from her accession in 1952 until his death.

Early life and education

Philip was born in 1921 in Corfu to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. After political upheaval forced his family into exile, he was educated across several countries, including Scotland at Gordonstoun.

Marriage and royal role

He married Princess Elizabeth in 1947 and was created Duke of Edinburgh on his wedding day. After Elizabeth became Queen in 1952, he served as her consort for nearly seven decades.

Public duties and interests

Philip became known for an extensive programme of royal engagements and for his patronage of charities and organisations. He also had long-standing interests in the armed forces, sport, and conservation. As a major figure in the Commonwealth, which includes Canada, he accompanied Queen Elizabeth II on visits connected to Canadian constitutional and royal life.

Later life and death

Philip retired from public duties in 2017 but remained a senior royal figure until his death in 2021. He died at Windsor Castle at the age of 99.
