Byers was born in Pittsburgh in 1880 and came from a wealthy American industrial family. He later became known in business and social circles, as well as in amateur golf.

Golf achievement

In 1906, Byers won the U.S. Amateur, one of the leading amateur golf titles in the United States. This victory was the main sporting achievement associated with his name.

Radithor and death

After an injury in the late 1920s, Byers began taking Radithor, a radium-containing patent medicine. He later developed severe radiation-related illness and died in 1932; his case drew major attention to the dangers of radioactive consumer products.
