She has been a leading figure in the Green Party of Canada, serving as party leader from 2006 to 2019 and returning to the role in 2022. She is the first Green Party member elected to the House of Commons and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2005.

Early life and career

Elizabeth May was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1954. Before entering Parliament, she worked as executive director of Sierra Club Canada from 1989 to 2006.

Political career

May became leader of the Green Party of Canada in 2006. In 2011, she won the party’s first seat in the House of Commons, representing the British Columbia riding of Saanich—Gulf Islands. She led the party until 2019 and returned as leader in 2022.

Policy positions

May is closely associated with environmental policy, including greenhouse gas reduction, fossil fuel transition, and environmental justice. Her policy focus also includes electoral reform, Indigenous reconciliation, animal rights, and pharmacare-related initiatives.

Honours and publications

May was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2005 in recognition of her environmental advocacy. She is the author of multiple books, including a memoir that became a Globe and Mail bestseller.
