Han Dong (politician)

Han Dong (Han Peng Dong) is a Canadian politician who served as a member of the House of Commons for Don Valley North from 2019 to 2025 and as a member of the Ontario Legislative Assembly for Trinity—Spadina from 2014 to 2018.

He was first elected provincially as a Liberal, later served federally as a Liberal MP, and became an independent in 2023 amid allegations he denied.

Political career

Dong served first in provincial politics and later in federal politics. He was elected to the Ontario legislature in 2014 and to the House of Commons in 2019, both times in Toronto-area ridings.

2023 caucus departure

In March 2023, Dong left the Liberal caucus after media allegations involving a Chinese diplomat and the detention of two Canadians in China. He denied wrongdoing and continued as an Independent.

Legal and public findings

Reporting in 2024 said an Ontario Superior Court judge found no documented evidence to support the allegations, and later accounts noted the Foreign Interference Commission’s final report cleared him of wrongdoing.

Later career

After leaving federal politics, Dong announced plans in 2026 to run for Toronto city council in Scarborough North. This reflects his continued involvement in Toronto-area politics.
