Hubert Reeves was born in Montreal, Quebec, on 13 July 1932. He studied at the Université de Montréal and McGill University before earning his doctorate at Cornell University in 1960. He remained closely connected to both Canadian and French academic circles throughout his career.

Scientific career

Reeves worked in astrophysics and nuclear astrophysics, with research focused on stellar reactions and the origin of chemical elements in space. He became a research director at the CNRS (Centre national de la recherche scientifique) in France and contributed to work on nucleosynthesis.

Science communication

Reeves became one of the best-known French-language science popularizers through books, television, and public lectures. His writing helped make astronomy and cosmology understandable to general readers, and his books were translated into many languages.

Environmental advocacy

In addition to science, Reeves became publicly engaged with environmental issues, including biodiversity and climate concerns. He served as president of Humanité et Biodiversité from 2001 to 2015 and later as honorary president.
