Jack Lang (Australian politician)

Jack Lang was an Australian politician who served as Premier of New South Wales from 1925 to 1927 and from 1930 to 1932.

Early life and political rise

Lang was born John Thomas Lang in Sydney in 1876 and died there in 1975. He entered politics through Labor movement activity in New South Wales and was elected to the NSW Legislative Assembly in 1913. He later became a leading figure in the state Labor Party.

Premier of New South Wales

Lang served as premier from 1925 to 1927 and again from 1930 to 1932. His second government became especially notable during the economic pressures of the Great Depression.

Split with Labor

Lang repeatedly clashed with the official Australian Labor Party and led a breakaway faction known as Lang Labor. His influence extended across both state and federal politics during the 1930s and 1940s.

Later political career

After his state premiership, Lang remained active in politics and won a federal seat in 1946 as an independent Labor-aligned figure. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1946 and served until 1949. He later made an unsuccessful Senate bid in 1951.
