Crime and murder

Furuta was abducted on 25 November 1988 and held captive for approximately 40 to 44 days. During this period, she was repeatedly raped and tortured by four male teenagers identified as Hiroshi Miyano, Jō Ogura, Shinji Minato, and Yasushi Watanabe. She died on 4 January 1989 from injuries sustained during the abuse.

Aftermath and case name

Following the discovery of Furuta's body concealed in a concrete-filled drum, the case was given the Japanese nickname 'concrete-encased high school girl murder case'. The case drew intense public attention and is often cited in discussions of juvenile justice in Japan.
