Lucas Cranach the Elder (c. 1472–1553) was a German Renaissance painter, printmaker, engraver, and designer of woodcuts. He served as court painter to the electors of Saxony and is closely associated with the Protestant Reformation through portraits of Martin Luther and other reformers.

Early life and training

Cranach was born in Kronach in Upper Franconia around 1472. Little is known about his early training, and he later took his surname from his birthplace.

Career at the Saxon court

From the early 1500s, he worked in Vienna and then became court painter in Wittenberg for the Electors of Saxony. This position gave him access to important patrons and made him a central figure in the artistic life of the region.

Artistic style and subjects

Cranach produced portraits, altarpieces, religious images, mythological works, nudes, engravings, and woodcuts. His work is known for its elegant, often stylised figures and its wide circulation through prints.

Relationship to the Reformation

Cranach was a close friend of Martin Luther and became a leading visual supporter of the Protestant cause. He created portraits of reformers and religious imagery that reflected Lutheran ideas.
