Michael Ignatieff

Michael Ignatieff is a Canadian writer, academic, and former politician.

Michael Ignatieff (born May 12, 1947) is a Canadian writer, academic, and former politician. He served as a Member of Parliament for Etobicoke–Lakeshore from 2006 to 2011 and led the Liberal Party of Canada from 2008 to 2011. After leaving politics, he returned to academic and university leadership roles.

Early life and education

Michael Ignatieff was born on May 12, 1947, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He studied history at the University of Toronto and later earned a doctorate in history from Harvard University. His family background includes Russian and Scottish Canadian heritage.

Academic and writing career

Before and after his political career, Ignatieff worked as a writer and academic at institutions including the University of British Columbia, Cambridge, the University of Toronto, and Harvard University. His work has focused on history, human rights, ethics, and liberal political thought. He has authored multiple books on these topics.

Political career

Ignatieff entered federal politics in 2006 and was elected to the House of Commons for the riding of Etobicoke–Lakeshore. He later became leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and leader of the Official Opposition, serving until the party's defeat in the 2011 federal election.

Later career

After leaving Parliament in 2011, Ignatieff returned to academic life. He later served as president and rector of Central European University. He has continued publishing books and commentary on public affairs.
