Michaëlle Jean is a Haitian-born Canadian journalist, documentary filmmaker, and stateswoman. She served as the 27th governor general of Canada from 2005 to 2010 and later as secretary-general of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie from 2015 to 2019. She was the first Black person and first person of Caribbean origin to hold the office of governor general of Canada.

Early life and education

Michaëlle Jean was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on September 6, 1957. She moved to Canada with her family in 1968. She studied comparative literature at the Université de Montréal and later taught Italian there.

Journalism career

Before entering vice-regal office, Jean worked in broadcast journalism. She became a well-known television news anchor for Radio-Canada and CBC Newsworld. She also worked on documentary projects, including collaborations with her husband, filmmaker Jean-Daniel Lafond.

Jean was appointed governor general of Canada in 2005 and served until 2010. Her appointment was notable as she became the first Black person and first Caribbean-born person to hold the office. She represented the Crown in Canada.
