Description

Muskellunge are long, slender fish with a flattened, pointed snout, a large mouth, and dark markings along the sides. They are usually greenish-brown to grey above and white below.

Distribution and habitat

The species is native to freshwater systems in eastern and northern North America. It occurs in Canada in Ontario and Quebec and has introduced populations in Manitoba; it generally prefers warm, vegetated lakes and slow-moving rivers.

Diet and behavior

Muskellunge are carnivorous ambush predators that feed mostly on fish. They are solitary fish that often hide near submerged structure before striking prey.

Size and life span

Muskellunge commonly grow to about 71–122 cm in length, though larger individuals are known. Some sources report adults can exceed 1.5 metres and may live around 20–25 years.
