Early life and playing career

Nurse was born in Carroll, Iowa, and played college basketball at the University of Northern Iowa, where he also earned a degree in accounting. He later played briefly in professional basketball before moving into coaching.

Coaching career

Nurse built a long coaching career in the United States, the NBA G League, and Europe before joining the Toronto Raptors' coaching staff in 2013. He became Toronto's head coach in 2018 and later became head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers in 2023.

Toronto Raptors tenure

In his first season as an NBA head coach, Nurse led the Raptors to the 2019 NBA championship. His Raptors teams were known for strong regular-season success, and he later won NBA Coach of the Year after the 2019-20 season.

Nurse was hired by the Philadelphia 76ers in June 2023, becoming the 26th head coach in franchise history. He entered the role after five seasons with Toronto.
