Early life and career

Gauguin was born in Paris and spent part of his childhood in Lima, Peru. He worked as a merchant sailor and later as a stockbroker before committing to painting.

Artistic development

After exhibiting with the Impressionists, Gauguin moved toward a more symbolic and expressive style. He coined or helped define Synthetism, emphasizing simplified forms, colour, and emotional meaning.

Brittany, Tahiti, and the South Seas

Gauguin worked in Pont-Aven in Brittany and later left France for Tahiti in search of what he saw as a more spiritual life and artistic freedom. Many of his best-known paintings were made in French Polynesia.

Legacy

Gauguin became more widely recognised after his death and is now considered a major figure in modern art. His use of colour and form influenced later artists including Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.
