Prince Albert

Prince Albert (1819–1861) was the husband of Queen Victoria and consort of the British monarch from 1840 until his death.

Early life

Prince Albert was born in 1819 at Schloss Rosenau near Coburg. He was the younger son of Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and Princess Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg.

Marriage to Queen Victoria

Albert married Queen Victoria in 1840. Their marriage was central to his public role, and he became increasingly involved in royal and court affairs.

Role as Prince Consort

Albert was made a Knight of the Garter and a Privy Counsellor in 1840, and was formally given the title Prince Consort in 1857. Contemporary and later accounts describe him as an influential adviser to Victoria.

Death and legacy

Albert died from typhoid fever in 1861 at Windsor Castle. His death had a profound effect on Queen Victoria, and later interpretations often emphasize his contribution to the modernization of the monarchy.
