Srinivasa Ramanujan was an Indian mathematician best known for major contributions to number theory, infinite series, continued fractions, and the partition function. Largely self-taught, he became internationally known through his collaboration with G. H. Hardy at Cambridge and is widely regarded as one of the greatest mathematical geniuses of the modern era.

Early life and education

Ramanujan was born in Erode, in present-day Tamil Nadu, and showed exceptional mathematical talent from a young age. He had limited formal training in mathematics and was mostly self-taught.

His work covered number theory, infinite series, continued fractions, elliptic functions, and the partition function. Many of his discoveries were highly original and later inspired further research.

Collaboration with G. H. Hardy

After Ramanujan came to the attention of G. H. Hardy, he moved to Cambridge in 1914. Their collaboration helped bring Ramanujan's work to wider international recognition.
