After leaving Pink Floyd in 1968 amid mental health problems, he released two solo albums before withdrawing from public life and living quietly in Cambridge.

Early life

Syd Barrett was born Roger Keith Barrett in Cambridge in 1946. He grew up in England and became interested in music and art at a young age.

Pink Floyd

Barrett co-founded Pink Floyd and became its chief early songwriter, singer, and guitarist. His imaginative lyrics and guitar style helped define the group’s psychedelic identity in the mid-1960s.

Solo career

After leaving Pink Floyd in 1968, Barrett recorded two solo albums, The Madcap Laughs and Barrett, both released in 1970. His solo work has since been viewed as influential within psychedelic and experimental rock.

Later life and death

Barrett lived privately after withdrawing from the music industry, with painting becoming a major part of his life. He died in Cambridge on 7 July 2006, aged 60.
