Tim Horton

Tim Horton was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman and entrepreneur.

Miles Gilbert "Tim" Horton was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman and entrepreneur. He played 24 seasons in the National Hockey League, most notably with the Toronto Maple Leafs, winning four Stanley Cups. Horton also co-founded the Tim Hortons restaurant chain and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977.

Early life

Tim Horton was born on January 12, 1930, in Cochrane, Ontario. His given name was Miles Gilbert Horton. He began his professional hockey career in the late 1940s.

NHL career

Horton played as a defenceman in the NHL for 24 seasons, from 1949 to 1974. He spent most of his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and also played for the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Buffalo Sabres.

Achievements and legacy

Horton won four Stanley Cups with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1962, 1963, 1964, and 1967. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977 and was named one of the NHL's 100 Greatest Players in 2017. Outside hockey, he co-founded the Tim Hortons restaurant chain, which became a major North American brand.

Death

Horton died on February 21, 1974, at age 44 in a single-vehicle crash near St. Catharines, Ontario. Reports note that drugs and alcohol were involved in the fatal accident.
