Early life and amateur career

Murray was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and grew up in Alberta. He played junior hockey before moving to the University of North Dakota, where he earned recognition early in his college career and won an NCAA championship.

NHL playing career

Selected by Chicago in the 1980 NHL Draft (3rd round, 57th overall), Murray debuted in the NHL in 1982 and became known as a reliable two-way centre. He played 915 regular-season NHL games and recorded 584 points. He spent most of his NHL career with the Chicago Blackhawks, where he played his first 10 NHL seasons and 12 total seasons. He later played for the Winnipeg Jets, Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Colorado Avalanche across 15 NHL seasons.
