Bout was born in 1967, reportedly in Dushanbe, in what was then the Soviet Union. Sources describe him as a former Soviet military translator and air force officer before he became involved in arms trafficking.

He became known for allegedly operating a global network that moved weapons to embargoed states, militias, and rebel groups. U.S. authorities said he was lured into a sting operation in Bangkok and later extradited to the United States.

Trial and imprisonment

In 2012, a U.S. court convicted Bout on charges including conspiracy to kill Americans and providing support to a terrorist organization. He received a 25-year sentence and served more than a decade before his release.
