History

Wagner Group emerged in 2014 and was associated with Dmitry Utkin and Yevgeny Prigozhin. It initially operated in support of Russian interests in Ukraine and later expanded into other conflicts abroad.

Operations

The group has been reported in war zones including Syria, Libya, Mali, the Central African Republic, and Ukraine. It has been used as a deniable proxy force and has also been linked to resource and security arrangements in Africa.

Relationship with the Russian state

Although described as a private military company, Wagner has long been viewed as closely tied to Russia’s military and intelligence structures. Russian officials confirmed in 2023 that its costs were fully covered by the state.

After Prigozhin’s death

Prigozhin died in a plane crash in August 2023, after which Wagner’s command structure changed and its role in Russian operations became less clear. Public reporting has since treated the organization as fragmented or reorganized rather than a single stable entity.
