Career

Lanthimos began his career in experimental theatre before moving into commercial work and film. His debut feature, My Best Friend (2001), was co-directed with Lakis Lazopoulos. His Greek-language projects gained international festival recognition, and his 2009 film Dogtooth brought him major attention, earning a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Style and themes

Lanthimos's films are widely described as surreal, darkly comic, and psychologically intense. They frequently examine themes of power, control, isolation, and social absurdity, often using deadpan performances and unsettling imagery to create a distinct, off-kilter atmosphere.
