Empress Elisabeth of Austria (1837–1898), also known as Sisi or Sissi, was the consort of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and later Queen of Hungary. Born into the Bavarian Wittelsbach family, she became one of the most famous royal figures of the 19th century and was assassinated in Geneva in 1898.

Early life

Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie was born in Munich in 1837 as a member of the Bavarian royal family. She was raised in an aristocratic environment before her marriage brought her into the Habsburg court.

Empress of Austria

She became Empress of Austria when she married Franz Joseph I in 1854. Her role at court was closely tied to the politics and ceremonial life of the Habsburg monarchy.

Queen of Hungary

Elisabeth became Queen of Hungary after the 1867 Austro-Hungarian Compromise. She developed a strong association with Hungary and remained an important symbolic figure there.

Death and legacy
