Geography

Surrey is situated in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, south of the Fraser River and adjacent to the Canada–United States border. It lies within Metro Vancouver and is bordered by other municipalities including Delta, Langley, and White Rock.

Surrey had a population of 568,322 in the 2021 census, making it the second-most populous municipality in British Columbia. It is also one of the fastest-growing cities in the region and a major centre of population growth south of the Fraser River.

History

Surrey was incorporated as a municipality in 1879 and later became a city in 1993. The city’s modern development reflects both suburban expansion and continued preservation of agricultural land.
